ISCHGL AT A GLANCE

Hannah’s Perfect Ischgl Ski Day

Depending which hotel I saty in I prefer to walk through either tunnel to the Pardatschgratbahn a massive 28 person bubble lift that goes up to Pardatschgrat. Bare left at the top and the first run down the Vellil valley is awesome – beautifully groomed red run which feels miles and miles away from anywhere! Back up to the top then I head toward Idalp and over to the 6 man chairlift – Hollkarbahn and then the Zelasbahn. Following piste 80 then swinging down piste 40 to the Piz Val bubble lift. This lift takes me up to one of the highest points in the area and right on the Austrian Swiss border. The more adventurous bare right and off piste past Fimalp down to the Gampen 6 man chair. I prefer to stay on the piste which drops almost 1000m to the 6 man chair. I love the long run down from the top of the Gampen chairlift to the Swiss resort of Samnaun – stunning views of the 3000m peaks that over look Samnaun. Sometimes you have to push a little towards the end of the blue run to the double decker cable car. Alp Trida is always a great sunny spot for a late lunch! After lunch the lifts coming ourt of Alp Trida offer some relaxing blues and reds before heading back towards Idalp and the ski back to Ischgl for some well earned apres ski!

WHY WE LOVE ISCHGL

  • Great destination for après ski
  • Snow-sure resort with consistently well-groomed pistes
  • Modern lift system makes for speedy ascent and maximum ski time

Beginners

All the ski lessons in Ischgl start up the mountain at Idalp. The nursery slopes are served by a couple of moving carpets, drag lifts and two chair lifts. Under the careful eye of the excellent Austrian ski school we work with, beginners will soon progress to exploring the area on one of the many long, wide blue runs. For beginners, there is an option to take a bubble lift down from Idalp at the end of each day as the runs back to Ischgl are red and get quite busy at the end of the day.

Intermediates

Ischgl is an intermediate skier’s paradise! Wide-open reds and blue pistes link the whole area. Start the morning off warming up around Idalp before heading down to Hollboden and up to Palinkoft. Take red 80 then decide whether to bare right or left. Right takes you down 40 (a long red) and blue down to Bodenalp, from Bodenalp a short chair accesses the piste down to Ischgl or lifts back towards Hollboden and Idalp. Alternatively bear left and stay on red 80 all the way down the Samnaun where you can grab a well-earned coffee.

Alp Trida is a delightful bowl with long reds and blue 60 which heads back down towards Samnaun.

From Idalp, the B1 chair opens up a wonderful run down the Velill, or take B2 and head up and over to Alp Trida.

Advanced

Advanced and expert skiers will revel in the high altitude off-piste ares. Take the bubble E5 and drop in the Fimba, following the north side down to Gampenalp. From Palinkopf wide open snowfields lead down the Samnaun, or head back towards Hollboden and try one of the black routes that lead down to Holkar. The whole area is criss-crossed with red and black runs. One thing is for sure, Ischgl will keep you on your toes!

Aprés ski

As well as being known for its charm and natural beauty, Ischgl, is renowned for the lively après scene found there every winter. Bars on the mountain open in the late afternoon for drinks with booming music, then the real party kicks off later on in town and goes on until the early hours.

Extra activities

In addition to the 245km of piste on offer, Ischgl also has a huge variety of extra winter sports activities. From snow-shoeing to horse drawn sleigh rides, there’s plenty to keep everyone occupied. While here, have a go at:
