Pradollano AT A GLANCE
Pradollano is the main resort village and base area of the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort in southern Spain’s Granada province, nestled high in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The resort is one of the southernmost ski resorts in Europe, yet thanks to its altitude (about 2,100 m at Pradollano and up to around 3,300 m on the slopes), it offers surprisingly reliable winter skiing conditions.

Pradollano is set against the dramatic backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains and just over 30 km from Granada city in Andalusia. It’s a purpose-built ski village with a bustling central plaza lined with hotels, apartments, shops, equipment rental outlets, restaurants, bars, health services, and ski schools.
The vibe combines mountain resort liveliness with Spanish culture — expect tapas restaurants, lively après-ski bars, and plenty of social spaces in winter.
Skiing & Terrain
- Ski Area: Pradollano functions as the base for the Sierra Nevada ski domain, which boasts over 110 km of groomed pistes served by 20+ lifts climbing up to about 3,300 m on the slopes of Veleta peak.
Runs: There’s a good mix for all abilities: green and beginner areas, wide blue and intermediate pistes, enjoyable reds, and some black runs for more experienced skiers.
Special Features:
- Night skiing on selected evenings.
Village & Services
- Accommodation: Pradollano has a range from ski-in hotels to self-catering apartments, many with direct access or short walks to the lift stations.
Facilities: You’ll find ski rental shops, gear stores, medical clinics, pharmacies, cafés, and restaurants all concentrated around the main plaza.
Connectivity: Cable cars (gondolas) and chairlifts whisk visitors up quickly to the skiing at Borreguiles and beyond.
Other Activities
Even if you’re not skiing, there’s plenty going on:
- Snow play areas and family attractions such as sledging zones and fun parks.
Off-piste and guided adventures for those wanting to explore beyond the groomed runs.
Cultural experiences and nightlife in Pradollano add a distinctly Andalusian twist to your mountain stay.
Snowpark & freestyle terrain, including Spain’s largest snowpark, Sulayr.
Modern snowmaking helps secure good coverage even in lighter seasons.
WHY WE LOVE Pradollano
- Great snow conditions with a long season
- Relaxed vibe
- 4 distinct mountains to explore
- Great off piste
Beginners
Why Pradollano is Good for Beginners
- Beginner-friendly terrain: A large portion of the ski area consists of gentle, wide runs that are ideal for first-timers. Nearly half of the resort’s pistes are easy green/blue slopes, and many of these are suitable for those just learning to ski.
Easy access from the village: From Pradollano village (2,100 m), you can take modern gondolas like the Al-Andalus or Borreguiles up to the main beginner zones near Borreguiles.
Gentle valley runs: After lessons or mountain practice, there are gentle runs that lead back down toward Pradollano — good for building confidence as you improve.
Covered conveyor lifts & practice areas: There are beginner areas with magic carpet lifts (moving walkways) and wide, clear slopes where you can practice basic turns and stopping without pressure.
Tips for Beginners
- Start at Borreguiles: Many beginner lessons and easy runs start up at Borreguiles after a short gondola ride — this gives you more room and better snow conditions to practice.
- Plan quieter times: Weekdays are often less crowded than weekends, which makes for a more relaxed learning environment.
- Take lessons: Beginner ski school will speed up your progress and make your first days much more enjoyable and safe.
Intermediates
Overview of Intermediate Terrain
- The resort offers a very strong mix of intermediate terrain — about 53 km of intermediate (blue) runs within the Sierra Nevada ski area.
- Many of these runs start from the central hub around Borreguiles and spread out across the mountain, with plenty of space to explore wide, open slopes that are ideal for improving technique and enjoying scenic descents.
Key Runs for Intermediates
- El Río – A long and popular intermediate route that connects Borreguiles down toward Pradollano. It’s wide and gentle with a nice rhythm, ideal for cruising and confidence-building.
- El Águila (Red) – A standout red run that’s great for confident intermediate skiers. It stretches around 6 km with a big vertical drop, lets you link turns while enjoying panoramic views from high on the mountain.
- Panorámica, Rebeco and Olímpica – Other notable intermediate/blue links that add variety without being too technical.
Terrain Feel & Atmosphere
- Wide open slopes: The pistes are typically broad and gently pitched above the tree line, giving intermediates confidence to make long turns without sudden terrain changes.
- Scenic descents: Many runs offer scenic views of the Mediterranean and even toward North Africa on clear days, making the skiing experience especially memorable.
- Good progression: You’ll find plenty of blues to warm up on — then easy reds to challenge yourself a bit more once comfortable.

Advanced
Black and Challenging Pistes
- Sierra Nevada has a limited but worthwhile selection of black (expert) runs scattered through the area above Pradollano. The most notable is the Visera run — short but steep with moguls that demand precise technique.
- Advanced skiers can also find challenging sections on some steeper red runs, especially near the higher sectors around Veleta and Laguna de las Yeguas.
- The ski area has about 113 km of pistes, with roughly 8 km designated difficult terrain — much smaller than major Alpine resorts, but well-worth exploring if you’re an expert skier.
Freeride and Deep Snow
- A big draw for advanced skiers is the off-piste and freeride terrain above the tree line (virtually the whole resort is above tree line). In the Laguna de las Yeguas area and around the higher bowls, you’ll find wide, ungroomed snowfields perfect for powder runs when conditions are right.
- Because the landscape is open and steep in places, experienced skiers often choose to leave the groomed pistes — but this should only be done with avalanche awareness and appropriate safety gear (transceiver, shovel, probe) due to risks outside secured areas.
High Altitude and Vertical
- From the Veleta peak (c. 3,300 m) down to Pradollano (2,100 m), there’s nearly 1,200 m vertical that strong skiers can exploit via long descents, linking steeper reds and blacks with freeride terrain for varied runs.
Family Skiing
Yes — Sierra Nevada (Granada)/****Sierra Nevada (with its base in Pradollano) is widely regarded as a good family skiing destination, especially if you’re looking for a resort that’s fun for kids and offers more than just pistes.
Why It’s Good for Families
Beginner‑friendly slopes & themed areas
- There are nursery and gentle beginner slopes close to the resort perfect for kids and novices.
- Family‑oriented trails like Pista del Mar and Pista del Bosque feature animal themes and fun elements for little skiers.
Childcare & ski schools
- A guardería (nursery) in Pradollano cares for children from a few months up (approx. 4 months–7/8 yrs), so parents can ski worry‑free.
- Multiple ski schools offer lessons tailored for kids and families.
Fun off‑snow activities for kids and non‑skiers
- Mirlo Blanco park has snow tubing, toboggan runs, and an alpine coaster (“Russian sled”) which is a hit with families.
- Other activities include ski‑bikes, ice skating, and beginner‑friendly play areas.
Family infrastructure in Pradollano
- The village at the bottom has restaurants (some kid‑friendly menus), cafés, shops, ski gear rentals, and other amenities that make it easier with children.
Things to Consider
- Crowds: Weekends and holiday periods can be busy, particularly at the base and beginner areas — visiting mid‑week is often quieter.
- Village vibe: Pradollano has a lively atmosphere (including nightlife), which isn’t always typical of quieter family resorts, but this doesn’t usually impact daytime family activities.

Group “ski school” weeks (e.g., during February half‑term) run with small groups (max ~8 people) for focused teaching.
