AVORIAZ AT A GLANCE

Avoriaz is one of the first and perhaps one of the prettiest purpose-built ski resort in the French Alps. Built in the late 1960s Avoriaz blends into surrounding cliffs. Avoriaz is highly perched above Morzine at 1800m and is all ski in ski out right in the middle of the Portes du Soleil. Avoriaz is completely traffic free, cleared paths, lifts and escalators all link the village together. We have carefully chosen accommodation which are close to the main drop off point! Situated on the high cliffs means Avoriaz have some amazing views of Morzine, Les Gets that will blow you away.

Duncan's Perfect Day in Avoriaz

I love Avoriaz for it's ski in ski out convenience. The highlight of any stay in Avoriaz has to be skiing the 'circuit'. It means an early start though! From my apartment I head over to Super Morzine where a series of long wide blues eventually take you to above Morzine. Unfortunately you have to down load in the bubble lift and there is a 300m hike through the resort town of Morzine. Up the Pleney bubble lift and then on down to Les Gets. A series of lifts takes me up to Ranfolly, then its down to the chairlifts that open up Chamossiere - one of my favourite ever ski mountains! A quick coffee at the snack bar then a long blue all the way back to Morzine and the yomp through to the Super-Morzine bubble lift. Down to Les Lindarets on the junior downhill run and up over Chaux Fleurie and down to Plaine Dranse to say hello to Babeth in her beautiful restaurant Le Vieux Chalet. Up to Linga where if conditions allow we venture into the 'hidden valley'  a glorious offpiste run. The new Portes du Soleil link lift to Super Chatel allows enough time for a quick sandwich(!), then its over and down to the lovely Swiss resort of Morgins. A series of pistes and lifts link over the Chez Gabby about Champoussin for a breather! Onwards to Les Crosets and up the Pointde des Mossettes for the glorious 16km run down to Les Lindarets and back up to Avoriaz

Take a look at skiing in Portes Du Soleil

WHY WE LOVE AVORIAZ

  • High altitude & stunning scenery
  • Location within the Portes du Soleil
  • Short transfer times

Beginners

Beginners are encouraged to go into ski schools and have lessons! The resort at first can be overwhelming with lots of skiers in one place. The ski schools help you over come any fears you have with skiing and after you clip into your skis you will fall in love. Mountain air, wind on your face, pure bliss – in our opinion there is no better feeling. Avoriaz boasts some of the longest green and blue runs in the alps, before you know it you will be heading all the way down along the Super Morzine ridge to Morzine.

Intermediates

Due to the size of the ski area here intermediate skiers can explore the long blue and red runs to blow out the cobwebs, the slopes are much better in the morning with freshly groomed snow! You can do the circuit of the Portes du Soleil, we recommend doing this om a good weather day or as they say it out there a Blue bird day! The Swiss side of the Portes du Soleil often remains untouched there are some truly fabulous runs here, Grand paradise down to Champery, with the obligatory stop for a vin chaud with spectacular views over the dent du Midi is a must.

Advanced

Advanced skiers will have a ball in the Avoriaz and the Portes du Soleil – head over to the Huates Forts, ski down Macon, a steep mogul knee bashing bowl this is a real test for the best skiers! Crozets on the other side of the World cup run is an off-piste paradise. If you want a real challenge there is the legendary run The Wall, one of the hardest runs in the Alps. Head down to Linderates from Avoriaz gives you access to the Stash, one of the areas superb snow parks, this one is eco- friendly! Some of the features are massive while others are smaller and more realistic for the less bonkers skiers!

Ski Schools

There is an excellent British run ski school in Avoriaz ‘Avoriaz Alpine Ski School’ run by Ian MacKellar

(World cup skier GB)! Make the most of these amazing instructors. There is of course ESF ski school.

Non skiing activities

Aquariaz is a unique facility, an aquatic paradise set in the mountains, with a variety of water slides, pools, lazy river and a half pipe! This is the perfect place for a family if you want to mix things up and enjoy the non-skiing side of the resort! There is also Paragliding. In our opinion one of the best ways to see Avoriaz, fly through the sky with an instructor from the top of the Arare piste, 15 minutes of alpine views in silence before landing at the Prodains lift. You could try out the Fat Bike tours, electric powered bikes that go out in the dark after the pistes have closed to skiers for some more action-packed adrenaline sports!
